Hello, gourmet travelers! Myeongdong is the heart of Seoul, always bustling with flashy shopping streets and countless crowds. While this area is overflowing with new trends, there are times when we miss the unchanging taste and style of the past. Would you believe that amidst the tourist-centric restaurants, there is a place that has silently kept its spot, continuing the true taste of Seoul?
Today, I would like to introduce Gaehwa, a landmark of the Chinese Embassy Street in Myeongdong and a Chinese restaurant loved by countless regulars for over 60 years. It became even more famous after being highly praised by singer Sung Si-kyung on his YouTube channel, but in fact, it has long been a holy land for foodies who knew where to look. Shall we leave together to discover what special flavors are hidden under the old signboard stained with the traces of time? 😊
60 Years of Tradition, A Living Witness of the Chinese Embassy Street 🤔
Gaehwa is not just a restaurant; it is safe to say it is the history of Myeongdong itself. Located right next to the Chinese Embassy, in what is known as the Hwagyo (Chinese-Korean) Street, this place boasts a tradition of about 60 years, passed down through three generations. It is not easy to find a “Nopo” (long-standing shop) in Seoul that maintains its legacy for such a long time.
The taste here is as deep and rich as its long history. Rather than flashy techniques, it focuses on the basics, making it a “real” restaurant frequented not only by nearby office workers but also by Chinese residents living in Korea.
The interior of the restaurant gives the feeling of traveling back in time. The first floor is a general dining area that is packed without room to step during lunch hours. On the other hand, to get to the second floor, you have to go up stairs reminiscent of an attic. Here, a massive round table for 16 people is prepared, making it perfect for group gatherings or company dinners.
Although it does not have a modern interior, the unique atmosphere exuded by the red decorations and old furniture enhances the taste of the food even more.
The owner and staff are very kind and work together perfectly, so the table turnover is quite fast. Even if there is a waiting line, don’t give up as seats open up faster than you think!
The Taste That Captivated Sung Si-kyung, Exploring Signature Menus 📊
What should you eat if you come to Gaehwa? This house is famous for its delicious Jajangmyeon. In particular, since being introduced on the YouTube channel 성시경 SUNG SI KYUNG(Meokeultende) by famous gourmet singer Sung Si-kyung, the popularity of Uni Jajang and Oyster Jjamppong has skyrocketed.
The harmony of the chewy noodles pulled directly and the sauce that has a deep taste without being stimulating proves why this place has endured for 60 years.
🍜 Best Noodle Dishes
- Uni Jajang: Gaehwa’s signature menu. The Jajang sauce made by stir-frying finely minced pork (Uni) clings perfectly to the noodles. It is much nuttier and softer than regular Jajang, making it a taste that everyone of all ages will love.
- Standard Jajangmyeon: An old-style Jajangmyeon stir-fried with large chunks of potatoes, onions, carrots, and pork. It features a rustic but affectionate taste faithful to the basics.
- White Jjamppong & Oyster Jjamppong: Jjamppong with white broth, not red, is popular. Especially in winter, the Oyster Jjamppong has a refreshing and spicy broth that is perfect for curing hangovers.
- Mussel Jjamppong: The visual of mussels piled up like a mountain and the refreshing broth taste are attractive.
🥟 Dishes & Sides
- Gunmandu (Fried Dumplings): Crispy fried dumplings are a perfect match for Jajangmyeon. It is a delicacy that many regulars order as a side menu.
- Meat Fritters (Tempura): A menu where you enjoy the taste of fried meat itself without sauce, recommended for those who enjoy crispy and nutty flavors.
- Other Dishes: Authentic Chinese dishes such as Kkansho Shrimp (Chili Shrimp), Nanjawanseu (Meatballs), and Yusanseul also boast high-quality flavors.
Menu & Price Information
Despite being located in the middle of Myeongdong, Gaehwa’s prices are surprisingly reasonable. It is popular even among solo diners because you can enjoy high-level Chinese food at an affordable price.
While many dishes are praised, some evaluations suggested that the Tangsuyuk was a bit bland. If you prefer a stimulating taste, we recommend other dishes such as Kkanpunggi or Chili Shrimp.
